Let’s go for a fresh side salad that goes perfectly on its own or with some of your favorite foods. Try out this Avocado Caprese Side Salad with fresh basil and nasturtium.
This Avocado Caprese Side Salad has become one of my favorite salads this summer. Since a regular Caprese salad is already one of my favorite salads adding a little twist turned out to make it even better.
Instead of just going with the classic caprese ingredients basil, mozzarella, and tomato I also added some chunks of fresh avocado and picked some nasturtium leaves from my garden. On a side note, I really do recommend growing nasturtium if you happen to have a garden. They require very little work and can be used for all sorts of things. So very nice to have, but if you don’t have any you can still make this recipe. It’s not the same but a few leaves of tender salad greens will work good as well. Now let’s make this great side salad.
Avocado Caprese Side Salad With Fresh Basil and Nasturtium
serves 4 as a side
7 oz / 200 g mini mozzarella balls
7 oz / 200 g cocktail tomatoes
about 10-15 fresh basil leaves
about 10 fresh nasturtium leaves
1 tbsp olive oil
Open the mozzarella and discard the liquid. Add them to a big bowl. Rinse and add the tomatoes whole. If you can’t find good cocktail tomatoes you can use regular tomatoes and cut them up into big chunks. Add the nasturtium leaves and half of the basil leaves. Chop the other basil leaves roughly and then add. Add olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Serve immediately.
What to serve Avocado Caprese Side Salad With
So what are you going to use this salad for? Well, my idea behind it is to use it as a side salad. Instead of just a bowl of greens, it is so much nicer to serve a salad that has a bit more thought to it. This one is still very quick to make but so much nicer than just greens.
You can, of course, serve it with whatever you like and even make it bigger and serve it on its own. But if you need recommendations I would say it goes perfectly with the following.
- Pasta dishes
- Charcuterie and cheese
- Grilled or roasted chicken
- Seared beef
Good luck and I hope you like this one as much as I do. If you want to learn more about that great mozzarella which goes into the salad I have the full story on that here.
